A scenic ride with a few challenges along the way
A lovely ride with a bit of everything — some beautiful roads, plenty of rolling countryside, and one or two climbs that will certainly make you work, but nothing to worry about. The rewards are well worth the effort!
We’ll set off from Whittle-le-Woods, crossing over to Wheelton before enjoying a steady climb up towards Brinscall and across to Abbey Village. From there, we tackle the only busier section of road on today’s route, before heading up towards Belmont and turning off to cross the dam just before the village.
At the crossroads, we’ll turn left for a scenic loop through some lovely countryside. There’s one short but testing climb here, reaching around 14–16%, so it’s a chance to dig in and enjoy the feeling of getting to the top! After that, we’ll descend towards Egerton before turning onto Longworth Road for a gentle climb back to the crossroads, followed by a welcome descent into Belmont.
Then comes the main challenge of the day — the classic Belmont climb, which features in the 2027 Tour de France! Take it at your own pace, enjoy the challenge, and savour the satisfaction of reaching the top. From there, it’s downhill to our lunch stop.
The hard work is then behind us, with the rest of the ride being mainly gentle, rolling and undulating. We’ll pass through Adlington, Heath Charnock and Coppull Moor before making our way back to the start via Euxton.
A great day out, some fantastic scenery, a couple of climbs to earn your lunch — and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the ride along the way!
