A scenic West Lancashire loop starting from the playing fields car park in Buckshaw, heading out through Euxton and Croston before making its way west towards Halsall and the open Lancashire moss-lands.
On reaching Halsall, there’s a well-earned stop at The Village Bakehouse for coffee, cake and snacks — the perfect chance to refuel before taking on the return leg.
From Halsall, the route heads back east towards Clieves Hill, before continuing through Rainford Junction and on towards Pimbo. From Pimbo comes one of the route’s best challenges: a good climb up to the top of Ashurst Beacon. On a good clear day, the climb is rewarded with impressive views across Lancashire, with Snowdonia occasionally visible on the horizon.
The route then drops towards Parbold village, before rolling back through Euxton and returning to the starting point at Buckshaw.
A great mix of quiet country lanes, open moss-land, rolling countryside, villages, coffee and cake, with two pleasant climbs — Clieves Hill and the climb from Pimbo to Ashurst Beacon.
Hills, Moss & Beacons — a proper West Lancashire loop with plenty of variety, a good café stop and a spectacular view waiting at the top of the beacon.
1. Start
The car park is usually fairly quiet during the week, so there should be plenty of space to park.
The playing fields are part of Buckshaw Village’s sports and community facilities, with grass football pitches, an artificial pitch and the car park.
The postcode will take you onto Old Worden Avenue. Allow a little time to find the car park, get your bike ready and meet up before we set off. It’s a convenient starting point, with easy access towards Euxton and Croston.
There are also local shops, supermarkets and cafés around Buckshaw Village if you need anything before or after the ride.
For the ride: arrive ready to go, bring enough food and water for the first section, and make sure your bike is in good working order. We’ll meet at the playing fields and head off together.
